Europe Day 1: Rome

This day was a wonderful introduction to Rome, travelling along the North-South Metro line.

Friday, November 5th
07:00 - 08:00 - Arrive in Rome at Fiumicino (LCO Leonardo da Vinci) Airport Terminal 3
08:07 - 08:37 - Go to Platform 25 for Leonard Express to Termini station 2
E$14, per 30 minutes, 6:37-23:37, leaves every :06 and :36 of the hour

08:37 - Take train to Termini station. Use the Marsala exit then go left, turn right at main road traffic light for M&J Place Hostels (Via Solferino 9)
09:30 - 09:45 - Arrive at M&J Place Hostels and organize our day bags.
09:45 - 10:30 - Leave hotel to Termini Station

• buy & activate Roman Pass at Termini’s PIT (Tourist Information Point, E$25) at Termini, Termini Station - Via Giovanni Giolitti 34, from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Flaminio
10:30 - 10:45 - Take Metro Line A from Termini towards Batitstini to Flaminio (4th stop).
10:45 - 11:45 - Visit Piazza del Popolo, Chiesa Di Santa Maria del Popolo (LP94, St. Mary of the People, closed noon-4pm Mon-Sat, closed 1:30-4:30pm Sunday).

Spagna
11:45 - 12:00 - Walk (600m 15 mins) SE down Via del Babuino (or Metro Line A from Flaminio one stop towards Anagnina to Spagna and walk 5 minutes)
12:00 - 12:30 - view Piazza Di Spagna (Spanish Steps, LP95).

12:30 - 14:00 - W of the Spanish Steps is Caffe Greco on Via dei Condotti, the most expensive shopping street. Walk around and have lunch.

Barberini
14:00 - 14:10 - From Spagna station take Line A towards Anagnina to Barberini station (1st stop). Exit to Piazza Barberini (LP103).
14:10 - 14:15 - View Fontana del Tritone (Triton Fountain).
14:15 - 14:30 - Walk W along Via del Tritone (300m) to a 5-way junction with Burger King. Go SW (200m) down Via della Stamperia to Trevi Fountain.
14:30 - 15:00 - View Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi, LP99).

15:00 - 15:30 - Walk back Barberni station to Palazzo Barberini.
15:30 - 16:45 - Visit the gallery at Palazzo Barberini (LP103 Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, E$5). The entrance is on via delle Quattro Fontane. Photography not allowed.

XX:XX - 16:45 - If ahead of schedule go 300m E to Chiesa Santa Maria della Vittoria (incl. St. Teresa in Ecstasy, LP103, closed 12:00 to 15:30).

Cavour
16:45 - 17:15 - Walk back to Barberni station and take Line A towards Anagnina to Termini (2nd stop), transfer to Line B towards Laurentina to Cavour station (1st stop). Walk S across zebra crossing 50m up a lane and steep steps. Turn right and walk 100m to the car park.
17:15 - 17:45 - Visit Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli (Church of Saint Peter in Chains, a.k.a. Basilica Eudoxiana, free admission, 8am-1230pm & 3pm-6pm) for Michelangelo’s macho sculpture of Moses (LP110).

Colosseo

17:45 - 18:30 - Walk 100m S and view the Colosseum by night.
18:30 - 20:30 - Eat nearby or go back to Termini for dinner and a walk. (Line B from Colosseo towards Rebibbia two stops).
